The view from 30 years

How HealthTech hiring is genuinely different.

HealthTech leaders navigate four buyers (patients, providers, payers, employers), three workflows (clinical, operational, billing), and one non-negotiable (HIPAA). Grant has placed leaders across telehealth, digital therapeutics, and population health — most of them with prior healthcare-operator backgrounds.

Three signals

What we screen for that generalists miss.

1

Privacy fluency is the trust filter

A leader who treats HIPAA as a checklist instead of a design constraint will lose a hospital deal in due diligence. We screen for actual decision-making under privacy constraints, not just compliance vocabulary.

2

Clinical credibility opens doors no résumé does

An RN or MD in a senior product role can get a 30-minute call with a hospital CMO that a SaaS PM can't. We track which candidates carry that license — it's often the deciding factor on a tied shortlist.

3

Payer literacy is often missing on product teams

If the product depends on reimbursement, the VP Product needs to know what a clean claim looks like. Most don't. We pre-screen for this on every commercial role.

The pattern we see most often

Treating healthcare like B2B SaaS with extra steps

Sales cycles run 9–18 months. The buyer (a CIO or CMO) is not the user (a clinician). The economic buyer (a payer) is a third party. Leaders from horizontal SaaS underestimate this and burn through their honeymoon trying to ship monthly when they should be building the next 18-month customer pipeline.

Has the candidate ever sat in a hospital clinical workflow review? Eight hours, two PCPs, one whiteboard. The candidates who have done this think about product fundamentally differently — and lose hospital deals less often.
